The one-point compactificationX̄of a topological spaceXis the union ofXwith a set consisting of a single element, with the topology ofX̄consisting of the open subsets ofXand all subsets ofX̄whose complements inX̄are closed compact subsets inX. Also known as Alexandroff compactification.
