The book doesn't try for one-to-one correspondence to any one tale, instead taking what it needs and hewing to its own vision. What becomes immediately apparent to the attentive reader, however, is that these emblems of verisimilitude have really no one-to-one correspondence with the fictional account: for instance, in the chapter "The Cabana," the photograph looks more like a Japanese type of dwelling or like some kind of mountain chalet, rather than a seaside retreat. The pairing procedure here works by hooking up 1 with 2, 2 with 4, 3 with 6, 4 with 8, and so on to make a perfect one-to-one correspondence between the two sets. |
