Huelva (wĕl`vä), city (1990 pop. 141,002), capital of Huelva prov., SW Spain, in Andalusia, on the Odiel River above its junction with the Río Tinto. A busy port with copper, sulfur, and cork exports, it also has fishing, shipbuilding, oil refining, and summer resort industries. A Roman aqueduct supplies the city with water. Nearby La Rábida monastery, where Columbus made his plans, is a summer university.
Huelva a port in SW Spain, between the estuaries of the Odiel and Tinto Rivers: exports copper and other ores. Pop.: 144 831 (2003 est.) Huelva a city and port in southern Spain; situated in Andalusia, at the point where the Odiel and Tinto rivers empty into the Gulf of Cádiz of the Atlantic Ocean. Capital of Huelva Province. Population, 100,000 (1971). An important center of the chemical industry, Huelva has enterprises of the oil-refining, nonferrous metallurgy, machine-building, shipbuilding, and wine-making industries.
