In north-central NY, southwest of Rome; organized Mar 5, 1794. Name Origin: For the lake, named for the Onondaga Indian tribe, one of the Five Nations of the Iroquois; name probably means 'hill people.'

Area (sq mi): 805.69 (land 780.29; water 25.40). Pop per sq mi: 587.00.
Pop 2005: 458,053. State rank: 11. Pop change: 2000-20005 -0.10%; 1990-2000 -2.30%. Pop 2000: 458,336 (White 83.70%; Black or African American 9.40%; Hispanic or Latino 2.40%; Asian 2.10%; Other 3.80%). Foreign born: 5.70%. Median age: 36.30.
Income 2000: per capita $21,336; median household $40,847; Pop below poverty level: 12.20%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $28,737-$30,372.

    Last week, an Onondaga County, New York grand jury ruled the murder of twenty-two-year-old transgender Letiesha Green was motivated by hate, possibly adding 5 years to the murderer's prison sentence.
    District Attorney WILLIAM FITZPATRICK of Onondaga County, New York, shaking his head over the naivete of a murderer who stashed the victim's body in a storage shed he rented under his own name.
    Appeals have been rejected in the past but now the district attorney of Onondaga County, New York, is understood to believe Bedell has served enough time, despite protests from cops who worked on the crime.
