OpenAL
(OPEN Audio Library) A 3D audio programming interface that is available for Windows, Mac, Linux, Unix and game consoles. OpenAL is an open source alternative to Microsoft's DirectSound interface. Windows Sound APIs
This is the relationship between OpenAL and the sound programming interfaces (APIs) from Microsoft. The MMSystem was developed for Windows 3.x.

The IESDK will include several open standards for game development including: Mesa3D for 3D graphics, OpenAL for 3D audio, OpenStream for video, and Xtrema for display management.
OpenSL ES fills a void in the audio API arena by enabling standardized, cross-platform access to a native platform's audio capabilities -- not something that APIs such as OpenAL or ALSA were designed to do.
OpenAL provides those advanced features with an open-source, nonproprietary implementation which is available not just for Linux, but for Windows and MacOS games as well.
