Byline: DAVE BLACK A COAL company is seeking more time to restore a huge North East opencast mine - claiming it could help a pounds 280m sporting, leisure and tourism vision become a reality.
UK Coal, which has existing or proposed opencast mines in Northumberland and County Durham and ran the region's last deep mine, Ellington Colliery, has been awarded the Carbon Trust Standard.
Hundreds of campaigners battling plans for an opencast mine at Ffos-y-Fran, Merthyr Tydfil, which would be just 36 metres from homes, came from all over Britain to march in Merthyr on Saturday.
