On the central eastern border of VT, south of Montpelier; organized Feb 22, 1781 (prior to statehood) from the former Cumberland County. Name Origin: For William of Orange (1650-1702), later William III, king of England (1689-1702).

    In north-central NC, west of Durham; organized Mar 31, 1753 (prior to statehood) from Bladen, Granville, and Johnston counties. Name Origin: Said to be for William III of the House of Orange, but when the county was formed, William V (1748-1806) was Stadholder; it seems more likely to be named for the latter (grandson of George II of England) than for the former, who had been dead for fifty years.
