Orczy, Emmuska (Magdalena Rosalia Marie Josepha Barbara), Baroness(born Sept. 23, 1865, Tarnaörs, Hung.—died Nov. 12, 1947, London, Eng.) Hungarian-born British novelist. The daughter of a noted musician, she was educated in Brussels and Paris and studied art in London. She became famous as the author of The Scarlet Pimpernel (1905), a swashbuckling adventure set in the era of the French Revolution. Her sequels did not match its great popular success. She also wrote detective stories. Want to thank TFD for its existence? Tell a friend about us, add a link to this page, add the site to iGoogle, or visit the webmaster's page for free fun content. |
