`), city (1990 pop. 85,860), capital of Örebro co., S central Sweden, W of Lake Hjälmaren. It is a commercial, industrial, and transportation center. Manufactures include shoes, paper, and processed food. Known since the 11th cent., it was the site of 15 national diets, notably the one in 1529, which brought the Reformation to Sweden, and the one in 1810, which elected Bernadotte (later Charles XIV Charles XIV (Charles John; Jean Baptiste Jules Bernadotte) , 1763–1844, king of Sweden and Norway (1818–44), French Revolutionary general. Örebro a city in Sweden, on Lake Hjälmaren. Capital of the Iän (county) of Örebro. Population, 117,800 (1976). A railroad junction, Örebro has machine-building, paper, and footwear industries. Of architectural interest are a castle, which was built from the 13th through 17th centuries, and the Romanesque-Gothic St. Nicholas Church, which dates from the second half of the 13th century.
