(table). Oregon Caves National MonumentNational monument, southwestern Oregon, U.S. It is a single cave comprising a series of chambers joined by subterranean corridors on four levels. Located in the Siskiyou Mountains near the California border, the monument was established in 1909. It has an area of 488 acres (197 hectares). It contains many stalagmites, stalactites, and other formations. Established: Proclaimed on July 12, 1909; transferred from Forest Service on August 10, 1933. Location: 20 miles southeast of Cave Junction, Oregon, on OR 46. Park is 50 miles south of Grants Pass, Oregon, and 76 miles northeast of Crescent City, California, via US 199. Facilities: Picnic area, rest rooms (é), lodging, restaurant/snacks, self-guided tour/trail. Activities: Hiking, snowshoeing, ranger-led programs, guided cave tours (late March through November). Special Features: Groundwater dissolving marble bedrock formed these cave passages and intricate flowstone formations. Above ground, the monument encompasses a remnant old-growth coniferous forest.
