Orest Georgievich Vereiskii

Vereiskii, Orest Georgievich 

Born July 7 (20), 1915, in the village of Anosovo, now in Smolensk Oblast. Soviet graphic artist. People’s Artist of the RSFSR (1970) and corresponding member of the Academy of Arts of the USSR (1958). Son of G. S. Vereiskii.

O. G. Vereiskii, who audited courses at the Academy of Arts in Leningrad from 1936 to 1938, created illustrations and several series of easel paintings. His works are characterized by keen observation and a precise graphic style. They include illustrations for A. T. Tvardovskii’s narrative poems Vasilii Terkin (1942-48) and House by the Road (1957), A. A. Fadeev’s The Defeat (1949; published in 1967), and M. A. Sholokhov’s The Quiet Don (1951-52), Fate of a Man (1958), and Virgin Soil Upturned (1967). He also did several series of drawings, watercolors, and lithographs, the result of his journey through Czechoslovakia, Syria, Lebanon, and Egypt (all in 1955), Finland (1957), Iceland (1958), and the USA (1960, 1963). Vereiskii has been awarded the Order of the Red Star and various medals.
