| A chemist can basically take any organic reaction out of a textbook and try it in an ionic liquid. In most organic reactions, one or more covalent bonds are broken, this normally causes a conversion of a functional group in the molecule from one category to a higher one. As in the 1953 experiment, they simulated organic reactions in the early oceans by heating a mixture of nitrogen, methane, and water. |
