After serving with José Gervasio Artigas, he became one of the Thirty-three Immortals who raised the standard of independence under Juan Lavalleja Lavalleja, Juan Antonio (hwän äntō`nyō läväyā`hä), c.1786–1853, Uruguayan revolutionist.
