On the central northern border of VT; organized Nov 5, 1792 from Chittenden and Orange counties. Name Origin: Probably for Louis Philippe Joseph (1747-93), Duke of Orleans, a friend of Marquis de Lafayette (1757-1834) and supporter of the American Revolution.
