Orpington
a district of SE London, part of the Greater London borough of Bromley from 1965

Orpington

a breed of chicken raised for meat and eggs. The breed was introduced in the 19th century in the town of Orpington, Kent County, England. Varieties, which are distinguished by plumage color, include the Black Orpington, the Buff Orpington, and the Red Orpington.

Orpingtons have a large, rounded body and short legs. The roosters weigh 4.5 kg, and the hens 3.5–3.6 kg. The hens lay 120–140 eggs per year, with a record yield of 343 eggs. The eggshells are brown. The Austalorp breed of chicken was developed in Australia from the Black Orpington. Orpingtons are raised in small numbers in the USSR, primarily by small-scale, noncommercial poultry breeders.
