Osceola (also known as Powell) (c. 1800–38) Seminole Indian leader; born in Georgia. Although not a chief, he took the lead in opposing all efforts to remove the Seminole from their Florida homeland. His warriors' killing of a U.S. agent in 1835 touched off the second Seminole War, and he led his people in actively resisting the Federal forces. U.S. forces seized Osceola under a flag of truce and imprisoned him in Fort Moultrie, S.C., where he died.
