In east-central FL, west of Melbourne; organized May 12, 1887 from Brevard and Orange counties. Name Origin: For Osceola (c. 1804-38), Seminole leader during the early years of the Second Seminole War (1835-42). Name is from Creek asi-yahola 'black drink cry,' and refers to a ceremonial drink made from leaves of the yaupon bush (Ilex vomitoria).

Area (sq mi): 1506.35 (land 1321.90; water 184.45). Pop per sq mi: 175.20.
Pop 2005: 231,578. State rank: 22. Pop change: 2000-20005 34.30%; 1990-2000 60.10%. Pop 2000: 172,493 (White 59.60%; Black or African American 7.40%; Hispanic or Latino 29.40%; Asian 2.20%; Other 13.30%). Foreign born: 14.00%. Median age: 34.60.
Income 2000: per capita $17,022; median household $38,214; Pop below poverty level: 11.50%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $20,112-$20,400.

    On the northwestern border of IA; established Jan 15, 1851 from Woodbury County. Name Origin: For Osceola (c. 1804-38), Seminole leader during the early years of the Second Seminole War (1835-37). Name, also spelled Ashi Vaholo Yahola, means 'black drink hallower.'
