Osgood, James Ripley (1836–92) publisher; born in Fryeburg, Maine. In 1871 he cofounded James R. Osgood & Company, an outgrowth of Ticknor & Fields. While retaining many fine authors, it failed financially, and with Osgood's departure (1880), was dissolved into a company headed by Henry Oscar Houghton. How to thank TFD for its existence?
