Monfils, who has over the past few years had to battle Osgood Schlatter's disease - more commonly dubbed "growing pains" which have caused pain in his knees - became the third Frenchman to land an ATP title this season after Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Jeremy Chardy to add to his success in Sopot, Poland, in 2005.
Children are often vulnerable to growth related overuse injuries such as Osgood schlatter's disease.
