Oshio Heihachiro
Born 1796; died 1837. Leader of an uprising against the Tokugawa shogunate in Japan in 1837. Oshio held the hereditary post of inspector of police in Osaka. He reflected the interests of the lower strata of the samurai class. Both samurais and the urban poor took part in the rebellion that he incited in February 1837.
