Osipanov, Vasilii Stepanovich 

Born Feb. 21 (Mar. 5), 1861, in Tomsk; died May 8 (20), 1887. Russian revolutionary. Member of the People’s Will.

The son of a soldier, Osipanov was a student at the University of Kazan from 1881 to 1886, whereupon he enrolled in the University of St. Petersburg. Active in the revolutionary movement from 1881, he joined the terrorist faction of the People’s Will at the end of 1886. Along with A. I. Ul’ianov and others, he planned an attempt on the life of Alexander III, heading the group of bomb-throwers. Arrested on Mar. 1, 1887, Osipanov conducted himself heroically during the investigation and trial. He was executed in the Shlissel’burg Fortress.
