Ossovskii, Petr Pavlovich

Born May 18, 1925, in the village of Malaia Viska, Kirovograd Oblast, Ukrainian SSR. Soviet painter. People’s Artist of the RSFSR (1975).

Ossovskii studied under S. V. Gerasimov at the V. I. Surikov Moscow Art Institute from 1944 to 1950. In 1971 he became first secretary of the board of the Artists’ Union of the RSFSR. His works, primarily landscapes and genre paintings, are marked by dynamic composition, severity of color resolution, and a romanticized view of the ordinary phenomena of reality. Examples of his work include On the City Outskirts (1957, M. S. Tuganov Severnaia Osetiia Republic Art Museum, Ordzhonikidze), a series of paintings Cuba (1961–63), a series Mexico (1963–64), and The Fisherman of Lake Pskov (1972). Ossovskii has been awarded the Order of the Badge of Honor and a medal.
