Ost

a metallurgical combine in Eisenhüttenstadt in the German Democratic Republic. It was constructed between 1950 and 1955 with the help of the USSR. Ost uses ore from the USSR and coke from the USSR and Poland. It has concentrators, sintering installations, blast furnaces, steel foundries, and rolling mills. It produces cast iron, rolled sheet steel, cold-rolled strip, and sheet metal with zinc and polymer coatings. Since 1969 the combine has been the leading enterprise in the Hermann Matern strip steel production association. Ost was awarded the Order of the Banner of Labor in 1957.
