Ostariophysi [ä¦stär·ē·ō′fī‚sī]
(vertebrate zoology)
A superorder of actinopterygian fishes distinguished by the structure of the anterior four or five vertebrae which are modified as an encasement for the bony ossicles connecting the inner ear and swim bladder.

Ostariophysi 

(also Cypriniformes). an –rder of bony fish, characterized by the presence of Weberian apparatus. The swimbladder is connected to the intestine. Ostariophysans areprimarily found in fresh water. There are four suborders:Characinoidei, Electrophoridei (Electrophorus electricus), Cy-prinoidei, and Siluroidei. There are five families in the suborderCyprinoidei; three are found in the USSR—Cyprinidae, Cato-stomidae, and Cobitidae. There are 13 genera of the family Cato-stomidae; five are native to the USSR (31 species). Of the 31families of the suborder Siluroidei, four are found in the SovietUnion: Siluridae (three species), Bagridae, Sisoridae (one spe-cies), and Amiuridae (one species). Many ostariophysans arecommercially valuable.
