Ostashkov

a city (since 1770) under oblast jurisdiction; administrative center of Ostashkov Raion, Kalinin Oblast, RSFSR. Population, 25,000 (1974). The city is situated on a peninsula in the southern part of Lake Seliger. It has a wharf. Ostashkov has a railroad station on the Velikie Luki-Bologoe line and is situated on a highway 199 km from Kalinin. The city has leather-processing plants, a clothing factory, a meat-packing plant, a fish-processing plant, and a brewery. Local educational institutions include mechanical, finance, and veterinary technicums. The city has a museum of local lore. Ostashkov has campsites for tourism at Lake Seliger.

Noteworthy architectural monuments in the city include the Voskresenskaia Church (1689); Trinity Cathedral (1697); and the Znamenskaia Church (begun in 1673; rebuilt in the 1860’s), which reveals the influence of the Naryshkin baroque style. In 1772, I. E. Starov drafted a city plan for Ostashkov. Its implementation in the late 18th and early 19th centuries resulted in the construction of more than 150 “model” buildings in the classical style.
