Born 1783 in Sol’vychegodsk; died Mar. 6 (18), 1833, in Astrakhan. Russian poet and prosodist. Ostolopov wrote prose, lyrical and patriotic verse, fables, and “folk” romances. He is best known for his compilation of the Dictionary of Ancient and New Poetry (parts. 1–3; published 1821), the first literary encyclopedia in Russia. G. R. Derzhavin, I. A. Krylov, V. A. Zhukovskii, and A. S. Pushkin all worked on the Dictionary. In 1822, Ostolopov published the scholarly commentary A Key to the Works of Derzhavin. He also translated the works of Western European writers. Want to thank TFD for its existence?
