In northwestern NY on Lake Ontario, north of Syracuse; organized Mar 1, 1816 from Oneida and Onondage counties. Name Origin: For the Oswego River, which runs through its western part; from Iroquoian osh-we-go, probably 'outpouring,' in reference to the mouth of the Oswego River where it empties into Lake Ontario, also translated 'the place where the valley widens.'

Area (sq mi): 1312.18 (land 953.30; water 358.88). Pop per sq mi: 129.40.
Pop 2005: 123,373. State rank: 24. Pop change: 2000-20005 0.80%; 1990-2000 0.50%. Pop 2000: 122,377 (White 96.50%; Black or African American 0.60%; Hispanic or Latino 1.30%; Asian 0.40%; Other 1.80%). Foreign born: 1.60%. Median age: 35.00.
Income 2000: per capita $16,853; median household $36,598; Pop below poverty level: 14.00%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $21,578-$22,679.
Unemployment 2004: 6.90%. Change from 2000: 0.40%. Median travel time to work: 24.40 minutes. Working outside county of residence: 41.00%.
