Chelidze, Otar Silovanovich
Born Sept. 8, 1925, in Tbilisi. Soviet Georgian poet. Member of the CPSU since 1958. The son of a worker, Chelidze graduated from the department of philosophy of the University of Tbilisi in 1950 and studied at the M. Gorky Institute of Literature from 1950 to 1954. His work was first published in 1943. Chelidze’s lyric epic ballads and narrative poems continue the traditions of the classical Georgian epos and occupy an important place in Georgian poetry. He has translated A. S. Pushkin’s Eugene Onegin and A. T. Tvardov-skii’s Vasilii Terkin and Distance Beyond Distance into Georgian.
