In south-central NY, south of Utica; organized Feb 16, 1791 from Montgomery County. Name Origin: Iroquoian 'rock site' or 'place of the rock.'

Area (sq mi): 1015.10 (land 1002.80; water 12.31). Pop per sq mi: 62.60.
Pop 2005: 62,746. State rank: 43. Pop change: 2000-20005 1.70%; 1990-2000 1.90%. Pop 2000: 61,676 (White 94.60%; Black or African American 1.70%; Hispanic or Latino 1.90%; Asian 0.60%; Other 1.80%). Foreign born: 2.30%. Median age: 37.10.
Income 2000: per capita $16,806; median household $33,444; Pop below poverty level: 14.90%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $21,857-$22,679.

    In north-central MI, southeast of Petoskey; established as Okkuddo County Apr 1, 1840; name changed Mar 8, 1843. Name Origin: Probably for Otsego County, NY, home of some early settlers; from Iroquoian 'rock site' or 'place of the rock.'
