On the west-central coast of MI bordered on west by Lake Michigan; established Mar 2, 1831 (prior to statehood). Name Origin: For the Ottawa Indians, a tribe of Algonquian linguistic stock whose name is derived from adawe 'to trade.'

Area (sq mi): 1631.97 (land 565.65; water 1066.32). Pop per sq mi: 451.50.

    On the northeastern border of OK, northeast of Tulsa; organized Nov 16, 1907 from Indian lands. Name Origin: For the Ottawa Indians, a tribe of Algonquian linguistic stock whose earliest known location was along the northern shore of Georgian Bay, Ont., Canada. The name is derived from Algonquian adawe, probably 'to trade.'

    There were red faces all round in the council offices of Ottawa County, Michigan, over an embarrassing misprint on their election ballot papers - the "l" was left out of the word "public".
