Ditts, Otto Germanovich 

Born Nov. 17 (29), 1876, in Vyshnii Volochek; died Dec. 17, 1957, in Leningrad. Soviet geodesist.

Ditts graduated from the geodesy department of the Academy of the General Staff (1909) and taught at the Military and Topographical School and at the St. Petersburg (Leningrad) Polytechnical Institute (from 1910), where he headed the department of geodesy. He participated in the geodetic work connected with the construction of the hydroelectric stations on the Dnieper, Svir’, Tuloma, and Vuoksa rivers and on the White Sea-Baltic Canal. He introduced into geodetic work the use of photogrammetry and the use of the interference of light as a means of making precise measurements. Ditts was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor and various medals.
