Kal’ning, Otto Ivanovich
(also O. I Kalninš). Born Feb. 13 (25), 1856, in Ogre, present-day Latvian SSR; died Mar. 25 (Apr. 6), 1891, in Tartu. Russian veterinary physician. After graduating from the Dorpat (Tartu) Veterinary Institute (1877), Kal’ning served in the Russian Army until the end of his life (in 1877–78 he participated in the liberation of Bulgaria); from 1878 to 1886, when he was in Bulgaria with other Russian veterinary physicians, he founded veterinary science in Bulgaria. In 1891 he obtained mallein from a glanders culture. He died after contracting glanders. Want to thank TFD for its existence?
