Oud, Jacobus Johannes Pieter

    0.03 sec.
Oud, Jacobus Johannes Pieter (yäkō`bəs yōhä`nəs pē`tər out), 1890–1963, Dutch architect. Oud's interest in abstract painting led him to conceive of buildings composed in terms of pure planes. With several painters, including Mondrian and Theo van Doesburg, he became associated with the influential Stijl Stijl, de (də stīl) [Du.,=the style], Dutch nonfigurative art movement, also called neoplasticism.

group, helping to establish its journal. From 1918 to 1933, Oud was official architect of Rotterdam and devoted himself to the production of extensive housing groups. Using reinforced concrete, he developed severely simplified forms in such dwellings as the workingmen's colony at Oud-Mathenesse (1921–22) and at the Hook of Holland (1926). His later works reveal a greater interest in ornamentation, e.g., the Shell Building at the Hague (1938) and the Children's House at Arnhem (1952–60).
