Name Origin: For the Ute Indian chief Ouray (1820-80), possibly 'the arrow.' He was chief of Uncompahgre Utes and signed a treaty with U.S. in 1863 as 'U-ray' or 'Arrow'; signed one in 1868 'U-re,' and later that year 'Ouray.' Area (sq mi): 542.21 (land 540.47; water 1.74). Pop per sq mi: 7.90. Pop 2005: 4,260. State rank: 53. Pop change: 2000-20005 13.80%; 1990-2000 63.10%. Pop 2000: 3,742 (White 93.20%; Black or African American 0.10%; Hispanic or Latino 4.10%; Asian 0.30%; Other 3.20%). Foreign born: 3.20%. Median age: 43.40. Income 2000: per capita $24,335; median household $42,019; Pop below poverty level: 7.20%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $26,424-$31,364. Unemployment 2004: 4.40%. Change from 2000: 1.20%.
