A monophyletic taxon that is used in a phylogenetic study to resolve which of two homologous character states are apomorphous.

Wann discussed a number of coping strategies utilized by fans including biased attributions (Wann & Dolan, 1994; Wann & Schrader, 2000) and outgroup derogation (Wann, 1993; Branscombe & Warm, 1994).
A total of 91 specimens, including outgroups, were used in analyses revealing 36 different mtDNA haplotypes.
Though the placement of this species varies depending on taxon sampling, it is clear that it is more closely related to cheilanthoid ferns than to any other potential outgroup sampled to date.
