The incidence of BBs in ovaries was scored in last instar nymphs using differential interference contrast microscopy to determine the frequency of ovarioles containing visible BBs.
Most of the well-fed young grew four reproductive organs called ovarioles, compared with only two for the less-pampered ants.
Generally only the terminal follicle within an ovariole is vitellogenic, there being a distinct demarcation between the previtellarium and the vitellarium of the ovariole.
