Owen Kay Garriott

Garriott, Owen Kay 

Born Nov. 22, 1930, in Enid, Okla. American astronaut and scientist.

Garriott graduated from the University of Oklahoma in 1953 and Stanford University in 1957. He received his Ph.D. in 1960 in electrical engineering. Between 1961 and 1965, Garriott taught at Stanford University and conducted research in ionospheric physics.

Garriott became a member of the astronaut corps in 1965. From July 28 to Sept. 25, 1973, he flew with A. Bean and J. Lousma as a member of the second crew to man the Skylab space station, which had been launched on May 14, 1973. Garriott’s flight time was 59 days 11 hr 9 min; he spent a total of 13 hr 41 min in three excursions outside the spacecraft.
