On the southwestern border of ID, south of Boise; original county; organized Dec 31, 1863 (prior to statehood). Name Origin: For the Owyhee River, itself named for a corrupt spelling of Hawaii, in honor of three Hawaiians (Owyhee) who were hired to trade with the Indians; they disappeared and were presumed to have been killed.

Area (sq mi): 7696.71 (land 7677.98; water 18.72). Pop per sq mi: 1.40.
Pop 2005: 11,073. State rank: 25. Pop change: 2000-20005 4.00%; 1990-2000 26.80%. Pop 2000: 10,644 (White 71.70%; Black or African American 0.20%; Hispanic or Latino 23.10%; Asian 0.50%; Other 22.50%). Foreign born: 11.90%. Median age: 32.90.
Income 2000: per capita $13,405; median household $28,339; Pop below poverty level: 16.90%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $18,376-$19,647.
Unemployment 2004: 2.70%. Change from 2000: -1.80%. Median travel time to work: 25.60 minutes. Working outside county of residence: 51.00%.
