oxidative phosphorylation: see phosphorylation phosphorylation, chemical process in which a phosphate group is added to an organic molecule. In living cells phosphorylation is associated with respiration , which takes place in the cell's mitochondria, and photosynthesis, which takes place in the chloroplasts.
