On southestern coast of WI, north of Milwaukee, organized Mar 7, 1853 from Milwaukee County. Name Origin: Said to be the true name of the main Sauk Indian tribe; meaning is either 'people at the mouth of the river' (the Ojibway name for the tribe), or 'yellow earth,' from their tradition that the first Sauk male sprang from yellow earth.

Area (sq mi): 1116.20 (land 231.95; water 884.26). Pop per sq mi: 371.10.
Pop 2005: 86,072. State rank: 18. Pop change: 2000-20005 4.60%; 1990-2000 13.00%. Pop 2000: 82,317 (White 95.80%; Black or African American 0.90%; Hispanic or Latino 1.30%; Asian 1.10%; Other 1.20%). Foreign born: 3.30%. Median age: 38.90.
Income 2000: per capita $31,947; median household $62,745; Pop below poverty level: 2.60%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $46,092-$47,527.
Unemployment 2004: 3.60%. Change from 2000: 0.60%. Median travel time to work: 22.10 minutes. Working outside county of residence: 48.40%.
