Ozolin, Nikolai Georgievich 

Born Oct. 20 (Nov. 2), 1906, in Komarowo, present-day Warsaw Województwo, Polish People’s Republic. Soviet athlete and teacher. Honored Master of Sports (1937). Honored Coach of the USSR (1957). Professor (1962) and doctor of the pedagogical sciences (1972). Honorary doctor of the Higher School of Physical Education in Leipzig. Member of the CPSU since 1943.

Ozolin has been a several-time champion and record holder of the USSR in pole vaulting (1927–50). He has won many international competitions. From 1931 to 1953 and from 1963 he taught at the State Central Institute for Physical Education, and from 1954 to 1962 he was director of the All-Union Scientific Research Institute for Physical Education.

Ozolin’s principal works deal with the theory and methods of sports and problems of athletic training. He has been awarded the Order of Lenin, two other orders, and a number of medals.
