Hansen, Peter Andreas
Born Dec. 8, 1795, in Tondern, Schleswig; died Mar. 28, 1874, in Gotha. German astronomer and geodesist of Danish descent. Hansen was director of the Seeberg Observatory in Gotha from 1825 to 1874. He refined the theory of the motion of the moon (1838, 1862-64); compiled tables of its motion (1857, accuracy of l″-2″ for the period 1750-1850), which were replaced only in the 1920’s; and refined the value of the solar parallax (8.92″). He also worked on the theory of the perturbed motions of planets, asteroids, and comets and on solar eclipses (new sun tables, 1854). REFERENCESBerry, A. Kratkaia istoriia astronomii.
