PC 98

Also found in: Wikipedia 0.06 sec.

(1) The third PC 9x specification, which defined five categories (Consumer, Office, Mobile, Entertainment and Workstation). It eliminated the ISA bus and pushed the minimum requirements to a 200 MHz CPU with 32MB of RAM and 256K of L2 cache. PC 98 machines had to support OnNow, and the BIOS had to support booting from a CD-ROM and be Y2K compliant. Systems could not ship with ISA cards installed, but could have an ISA bus for legacy devices. See PC 9x.

(2) (PC-98) NEC's proprietary PC line in Japan. NEC had more than 60% of the PC market with the PC-98 architecture until Windows became widely used on competitors' machines. Eventually NEC migrated to the global PC standard. In 2001, NEC and Fujitsu PC market shares were almost the same (NEC-20%; Fujitsu-19.8%).
