PIF

Also found in: Medical, Acronyms, Wikipedia, Hutchinson 0.01 sec.

PIF

(Program Information File) A data file in Windows 3.x and NT that stores window settings for DOS applications. It allows screen size, fonts and other options to be selected in order to customize the way the DOS app appears under Windows. DOS applications can be launched by clicking their PIF file, and the PIFEDIT.EXE utility is used to create and edit them.

In Windows 9x, 2000 and XP, PIF was replaced by the Properties attributes about the file. To view and edit settings for a DOS application, do the same thing that works for any Windows resource: right click the icon and select Properties.

This dialog defines how the COMPG.BAT batch file will display and run under Windows. COMPG executes DOS commands and Windows console apps to compile the Encyclopedia text files into the CDE dictionary format. See console app.

DOS Under Windows
By changing options in Properties for this DOS batch file, the window size can be modified and made to disappear after the execution is over.
