packed decimal
A storage mode that places two decimal digits into one byte, each digit occupying four bits. The sign occupies four bits in the least significant byte.
packed decimal [′pakt ′desĀ·məl]
(computer science)
A means of representing two digits per character, to reduce space and increase transmission speed.
