A software routine that analyzes incoming data packets and forwards them or discards them based on one or more criteria such as address, range of addresses and type (e-mail, file transfer, etc.). Packet filtering is generally performed in a router, in which case the router is known as a "screening router." See deep packet inspection, firewall, Web filtering and router.
