Paczoski, Józef 

Born Nov. 26 (Dec. 8), 1864, in Belgorodka, now Dubno Raion, Rovno Oblast. Died Feb. 14, 1942, in Sieroslaw, near Poznań. Polish biologist.

Paczoski received his training at the Uman’ School of Agriculture and Horticulture and headed the Kherson museum of natural history from 1897 to 1920. He was a professor at the Kherson Polytechnic Institute from 1918 to 1922 and head of the botanical department of the Askaniia-Nova preserve in 1922–23. Between 1923 and 1925 he directed research at the Biatłwieza National Park in Poland. In 1925 he was appointed a professor at Poznán University.

Paczoski’s principal works deal with the flora of the Ukraine and Poland and with entomology, ornithology, horticulture, forestry, and scientific methodology. He was one of the authors of the first textbook on phytocenology, whose principles and problems he outlined in the late 19th century.
