Pago Pago (päng`ō päng`ō, päng`gō päng`gō), town (1990 pop. 10,640) and capital of American Samoa, on the Southern shore of Tutuila island. Pago Pago has an excellent, landlocked harbor and is the only port of call in American Samoa. Tourism and tuna canning are important industries. From 1878 to 1951 it was a coaling and repair station for the U.S. navy. Just south of the town is the Pago Pago International Airport.

Town and agglomeration of towns (pop., 2000: 4,278) that form the capital of American Samoa. Located on the shore of a deep inlet on the southern side of Tutuila Island in the South Pacific Ocean, it was selected in 1872 as the site of a U.S. Navy coaling station. An active naval base until 1951, it is now a regular port of call. Its airport, opened in 1964, has stimulated tourist traffic and modernization.

(Pango Pango), a city and the capital of American Samoa (a US possession). Situated on Tutuila Island. Population, 2,500 (1970). A seaport, Pago Pago exports primarily copra and canned tuna. It has a fish cannery.
