Pai Lang Rebellion of 1912–14

    0.03 sec.
Pai Lang Rebellion of 1912–14

a peasant uprising in China.

The Pai Lang rebellion broke out spontaneously in the summer of 1912 in the province of Honan. Led by the ruined landowner Pai Lang, the rebels united against the landlords and bureaucrats under the slogan “Kill the rich—help the poor.” They formed a guerrilla army which waged war against government forces for two years. The rebellion reached its height at the end of 1913 and during the first half of 1914, when the rebels seized many districts of Hopeh, Anhwei, Shensi, and Kansu, as well as Honan. At this time the main goal of the rebels was the overthrow of the reactionary military dictatorship of Yuan Shih-k’ai. The uprising was suppressed in August 1914 (Pai Lang was killed at this time).
