Painting, Sculpture, and Architecture, School of 

a prominent art school in Moscow; along with the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts, one of the major art schools in Russia. The school, founded in 1832 by E. I. Makovskii and A. S. lastre-bilov, was originally called the Life Class. It was called the Art Class from 1833 to 1843 and the School of Painting and Sculpture of the Moscow Art Society from 1843 to 1866. In 1865 the Imperial Architectural School was incorporated with it. The school was reorganized as the Second State Free Art Studios in 1918.

More democratic than the St. Petersburg Academy, the school was prominent in the development of Russian realistic art in the second half of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Outstanding artists who studied and taught at the school included V. G. Perov, A. K. Savrasov, I. M. Prianishnikov, V. E. Makovskii, 1.1. Levi-tan, S. A. Korovin, K. A. Korovin, A. E. Arkhipov, and S. V. Ivanov. The faculty also included V. D. Polenov and V. A. Ser-ov. The school produced such prominent artists as S. V. Gerasi-mov, A. S. Golubkina, S. T. Konenkov, A. I. Kravchenko, K. S. Petrov-Vodkin, A. A. Plastov, M. S. Sar’ian, and K. F. Iuon.
